Interpreting Collective Pieces of Work
Some assessments include the collective set of abilities that culminate in a larger piece of work or result such as performance-based assessment, collective work sample analyses, or a series of interviews and observations. While each of these yield scores such as those obtained through use of a rubric, rating scale, or checklist, they often reflect aggregated aspects within the studentâs learning. These collective tasks are generally completed less frequently and yield progress toward several integrated skills (e.g., use of higher level thinking while demonstrating depth of knowledge, social and behavior management skills in different classroom settings, demonstrated use of several math skills through a series of work samples). While these and similar types of tasks may yield a lesser volume of assessment scores, they provide educators with insights into learner application of several interrelated skills within a broader context at strategic times within the school year. These types of monitoring results may be interpreted in several ways:
Authentic application of skills and abilities are seen in student products.
Collections of work samples may yield patterns of strengths or areas requiring additional support.
Extent of learnerâs overall experiential background may become more apparent.
An area of academic or social-emotional strength/concern is more thoroughly addressed and explored, including the role of ecological factors.
Cultural and linguistic needs unique to the learner may be more easily recognized and supported in the classroom.
